The BBC has reported that thousands of residents and visitors are evacuating the Greek island of Santorini following a series of earthquakes over the past four days. According to the BBC article, more than 11,000 people have already left the island as “hundreds of earthquakes” have shaken the region, with the strongest tremor reaching a magnitude of 5 last Tuesday.
In response to the situation, authorities have taken precautionary measures, including the closure of schools and warnings against large gatherings. To bolster efforts, an additional 51 firefighters, along with nine vehicles, a fire department helicopter, and aerial rescuers, have been deployed to the island.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has called for calm amid the ongoing situation.
